Guy Fawkes Recreated

Category: History
Posted: 2005-10-31 15:47

Interesting Times article today. ITV1 with some experts from Arup, recreated an early Palace of Westminster and blew it up with 36 tonnes of gunpowder.

The results were pretty spectacular proving that James I and his court, had Guy Fawkes succeeded would have been killed outright with the upward thrust of the blast.

Even the gunpowder was recreated as accurately as possible using compounds of saltpetre, charcoal and sulphur from a factory in Spain.

Many experts believed that Guy Fawkes attempts would have resulted in a damp squib as the gunpowder would have decayed before he could have set the fuse off.

The programme, The Gunpowder Plot can be seen tomorrow on ITV1 at 21.45 and is introduced by Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond.
